Year 1 students at St Hilary have been looking at countries with hot and cold climates. To support this work we delivered a singing workshop learning to sing folk songs from Africa and Iceland. There was such a fantastic energy in the room and the students really rose to the challenge, tackling some difficult pronunciation in the songs. HDS can't wait for the Music Scholars tour later this term!

Knowing how to navigate is an important skill for all DofE expeditions. On their practice, the Silver teams worked together to successfully complete their practice routes. As such, participants are now ready for their journey on the qualifying expedition in a few weeks’ time. Good luck!

Year 5 students at Gulval Primary School had a brilliant time learning the ukulele yesterday! We covered all the basic techniques as well as some music theory. They finished with a wonderful rendition of THAT famous rock song! We can't wait to learn more about their musical journey, and support them to become the best musicians they can be!

A big moment yesterday at lunchtime as the Year 11 Band and 'The Band of Fiasco' played their last ever Performance on the Plinth lunchtime gig. Despite their busy revision and coursework schedule they continue to rehearse and perform at school events and local functions. Under the expert guidance of Mr Bosworth both bands put on a fantastic show including an amazing OutKast Medley.

The English Faculty have recently run two amazing events!
At the start of term, 28 Year 7 students were invited to the Kurt Jackson Foundation in St Just to work on a blackout poetry project using the new art collection as inspiration. The art was incredible and as a result some excellent poetry was created. Look out for a display board soon! Well done Year 7!
We also had the amazing Jess Farr-Cox, a Bristol University lecturer, come down to give a series of degree level Literature lectures to classes in Years 9,10 and 11! These were an excellent look into what learning at university is like and we are very grateful to both Jess and the University for offering this opportunity as part of their outreach programme.

On Thursday 25th April, HDS competed in the Penwith Schools Athletics Championships at Carn Brea athletics track. All students represented the school with pride and were great competitors. Students participated in individual track and field events and the competition culminated with the relay races. Impressive performances were rewarded with HDS collecting a number of medals; 19 gold medals were awarded in total, with a significant amount of silver and bronze medals also achieved. Everyone did an amazing job of competing and supporting one another which contributed to it being such a successful day! A particular mention must be made to the Year 10 girls team who will be returning to Carn Brea at the end of June as they qualified for the Cornwall School Games. Well done to all students that took part.

Yesterday HDS music scholars and singers walked down the road to perform for St Marys RC Primary School. The primary focus was singing, but there was also time for students to introduce themselves and their instruments to their younger peers. Trumpet, Tenor Sax, Flute, Double Bass and drums! It was great fun and the first step toward inspiring the next generation of HDS musicians!

This week students took part in the HDS Spring Recital at Zennor Theatre, Penwith College. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to perform in the college theatre space with a professional sound set up, meticulously organised by our Performance Co ordinator Mr Bosworth.
HDS continued its strong jazz tradition with outstanding performances from New Notes jazz band, Scholar's jazz band and a 'jazzy' arrangement of the Sound Garden classic Black Hole Sun. The night also featured some outstanding vocal performances organised by Ms Turton and Ms Kleiman, once again with our music scholars taking key roles including some wonderful solo performances. Mr Martin provided a wonderful arrangement of the Radiohead classic 'No Surprises' as well as joining our Year 11 guitarist Jet for a beautiful classical guitar duet. Extra thanks also to Mr Martin for his sound engineering skills and Ms Meyritz for her brilliant accompanying. As well as providing trombone for jazz band, Mr Chinn played a key role in calming nerves, warming students up and providing performance advice to students waiting in the wings.
The music department have a busy term ahead so watch out for more performances coming soon!

WOW! We had an amazing time skiing in France over the Easter break. The conditions were perfect, and it was great to see how well all the students progressed on the slopes over the 6 days we were there.
Showing amazing resilience, our beginner group moved on quickly from the nursery slopes…skiing down some amazing blue runs by the end of the week. The intermediates made a great effort in combatting the reds, and the advanced group…well…we simply couldn’t keep up with them!
Many thanks to the team at Elemental Ski, the staff at Hotel La Portette, and our amazing instructors for looking after us for the week! We can’t wait to come back next year!
SIGN UP OPEN! If your child is interested in joining us on the ski trip next year please speak with Mrs Thurston today!
