Duke of Edinburgh's Award
The DofE was designed to challenge young people between the ages of 14 - 24 to attain standards of achievement and endeavour in a wide variety of active interests – to serve their communities, experience adventure and to develop and learn outside the classroom.
Here at DofE HDS we believe in young people, in their innate value and infinite potential. We help young people build life-long belief in themselves, supporting them to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, and discover talents they never knew they had.
Year 9 and Year 10 DofE Enrolling now!
We are running Year 9 Bronze and Year 10 Silver awards this year.

On Friday, HDS travelled to Truro Methodist Church for the annual Music for Youth Event. This year HDS took two new ensembles for their debut performances.
The first was the new Penwith Jazz Orchestra project led by Mr Bosworth. HDS facilitated students from four other schools to come together and play some quality jazz music. The jazz band played a great set, with Miles Davis's, 'Milestones', being a real highlight. Also worth a mention were the fantastic solos from Tom, Jemima and George. The other new ensemble performing were, 'All the Young Dudes', - a brand new choir focusing on highlighting lower voices. ATYD made a real impression on the judges who spoke of the importance of giving these students a voice and outlet. Lastly, a music trip is not complete without a trademark performance from our Impact choir led by Miss Kleiman. Once again, the judges commented on the detail and vocal quality in the performance.
Well done to all of our music students and the music team!

On Thursday a small group of enthusiastic Year 7 students took part in an live online comic masterclass with Hugh Raine of The Beano!
Hugh discussed the secrets of comic book creation, including Beano's iconic Betty & the Yeti. He then talked the students through a Yeti ‘drawalong’ and how to create their own comic strip. Betty & Yeti involves humorous stories about rampaging yetis and frolicking flamingos! Hugh’s latest book has just been realised and our students are looking forward to borrowing it from the library soon.
All students created fantastic yetis & comic strips and have been inspired to continue with their comic book creations. Well done everyone!
If anyone else would like to watch the recording and get creative over the holidays, you can with this link: https://youtube.com/live/IWQmSjB5Mnc?feature=share

Year 10 GCSE Drama students had the opportunity to take part in a workshop at the Minack Theatre last Friday. The work was centred around Shakespeare's ‘The Tempest’ with emphasis on the various theatre practitioners that we have been exploring in class - Stanislavski, Brecht, Artaud and Berkoff. Associate Director, John Brolly, led a brilliant workshop with games and exercises to engage and challenge our students. Not only did our students have fun, they came away with lots of ideas to inspire them for their GCSE drama performances. It's fantastic to have such a valuable link with a professional theatre, and to be able to experience live theatre at such a stunning venue in our community. Thank you for having us.

On Thursday, our Year 7 boys competed in an indoor cricket competition at Truro where they played against three Cornish schools.
There were some strong batting displays with Thomas hitting an amazing six! A notable team performance saw HDS score 97 runs in just 8 overs in one game. The bowling and fielding performances were definitely highlights as well, bowling all three teams out in each game. A shout out to Corey who took the most causal catch of the afternoon from close range, Ace with a superb one handed catch, Jamie and Will who displayed some exceptional run outs and, finally, Archie who performed some wonderful leg spin bowling!
Considering some of the boys in the team had never played cricket before, they did a fantastic job! Well done guys!

Last week we hosted a fantastic Spring Recital at HDS, with a mixture of talent on display. The focus of this show was to celebrate the excellent work of our peripatetic teachers, with all the pieces performed being chosen by them and their students. There were some fantastic performances from our regular ensembles: Big Sing, Ukulele group & Wind Band as well as a wide variety of soloists. Even a bass guitar trio, which we think is a HDS first! Also worth a special mention was our newly formed saxophone ensemble who, after having had a terms worth of lessons in a large group, can't wait to sign up to regular lessons and join one of our bands. A big thank you to all our amazing music teachers, you outdid yourselves once again!

Red Nose Day has been good fun here at HDS. Lots of red clothing could be seen as you walked around the school and we loved this years red noses! A blast from the past, celebrating noses from years gone by, to mark 40 years of comic relief! Thank you to everyone who donated and to those who also donated Easter eggs which we are very excited to deliver. #dosomethingfunnyformoney

Four of our music groups were entered into the Cornwall Music Festival at Truro’s Methodist Church this year.
Over two days our students competed in this lovely community event. The first day of the festival saw our Jazz Band and Band of Fiasco, led by Mr Bosworth, putting on a fantastic performance and really standing out amongst the competition. On the second day there were brilliant performances from two of our school choirs. Big Sing sang beautifully under the expert direction of our visiting music teacher Holly Turton-Sangster. In the senior category competing against Truro school choristers and sixth formers were Impact Choir. Miss Kleiman and the singers’ sound was incredibly well rehearsed and refined - a brilliant performance.
It was a wonderful celebration of music in the region and our students did us proud. Well done to everyone who took part.

Year 10 students visited St Ives this week as part of their Human Geography enquiry. Students were there to collect data to prove or disprove their hypothesis: “Traffic management in St Ives is ineffective”.
Students this year took the train to St Ives to evaluate alternative transport options to cars. This was a lovely experience other than one trip where the morning train was cancelled, however, it allowed students to see the impacts of cancelled public transport! When in St Ives, students completed questionaries with members of the public, completed traffic and pedestrian counts and carried out a land-use survey on the different types of buildings in St Ives. This data has enabled students to reach a decision as to whether they think traffic is managed effectively or not in the local area.
Our Year 10 students will complete the next part of the fieldwork process in school (data analysis, presentation and evaluation) in preparation for their final exam in Year 11. Well done Year 10!

As part of World Book Day this year students and staff transformed classroom doors into gateways to some of literature's most iconic worlds. As part of our Door Decorating Competition, students were challenged to design the inside of their classroom doors inspired by a chosen book – and they certainly delivered.
Congratulations to our winning door - this charming depiction of the well known children's book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'! We just loved it!

We had an amazing day today for World Book Day! Some brilliant costumes could be spotted as you walked around the school, we always love guessing who everyone is meant to be!
As well as amazing costumes, this year's World Book Day saw our classrooms transformed into gateways to some of literature's most iconic worlds. As part of our Door Decorating Competition, students were challenged to design the inside of their classroom doors inspired by a chosen book – and they certainly delivered.
From The Hungry Caterpillar to The Secret Garden, each door showcased creativity, teamwork, and a clear love of reading. The attention to detail was incredible, with designs featuring everything from hand-drawn characters to 3D props and powerful quotes.
Keep your eyes peeled for the announcement of the winning door!

Our Year 7 girls participated in an indoor cricket tournament recently. There were some notable moments throughout the games. One from student Ella, who showed off some excellent bowling skills. Student Sadie, also took a fantastic catch and in one of the games retired at 20! The attitude from the girls was brilliant throughout and they had a great day. We can't wait to see how they develop over their time here at HDS! Well done everyone.

On Friday last week, our silver DofE teams continued their training with a day hike. With plenty of sunshine and clear skies, the teams reached the summit of both Godolphin and Tregonning Hill and were able to enjoy the views that overlook Mount’s Bay. The teams had a great time developing their micro navigation skills in preparation for their next challenge on their Practice Expedition.

Year 9 students visited Newlyn Art Gallery today to view their social fabric exhibition and take part in producing their own ‘craftivism’ banner combining craft and activism. The exhibition really got everyone thinking.
Working with local artists and makers they produced some amazing outcomes which all came together as a final banner with their chosen slogan, ‘Slay the Day Away’! Thank you to Newlyn Art Gallery for having us, we had a brilliant day!
