On Monday our Year 7 boys WON the Penwith indoor cricket tournament! The boys performed unbelievably well, they worked together as a team and all played a part in the success.
Our captain, Archie, bowled and batted superbly, retiring on 20 a couple of times. Thomas took some crucial wickets and scored some crucial runs. Will showed great understanding of the indoor game as well retiring at 20 runs. Ace was an ‘ace’ wicket keeper throughout and, not to be forgotten, Jamie and Corey who fielded brilliantly taking some fantastic catches. What a team!
The final game could not have been closer with it going down to the last ball, forcing a super over, where yet again the winning runs were scored on the last ball! The boys will now represent HDS at Truro College going up against fellow schools from around the county. Well done boys and good luck!

Our annual Careers Fair was another HUGE success!
We had visitors from so many career sectors, including accountancy, sustainable construction, mining, health, engineering, the fire service, hospitality, armed forces, law, fishing, agriculture, performing arts, marine industry, veterinary and so much more! In addition, 6th forms, colleges, universities and training providers were also in attendance to provide career guidance and inspiration. It was just great hearing all the enthusiastic conversations happening as you made your way around the stands.
We would like to say another big thank you to everyone who attended. This fantastic event wouldn’t be possible without you.

This week is Children's Mental Health Week.
The week is dedicated to raising awareness about the emotional, social, and psychological needs of our students. It provides us with an excellent opportunity to not only educate our students but also to offer guidance and support for families in supporting healthy conversations around mental health. Throughout the week, our school will be participating in various activities and assemblies that promote self-expression, emotional awareness, and resilience. We wish to help students understand their emotions, learn coping strategies, and build a positive mindset.
We believe that by working together, we can help our children develop a strong sense of emotional resilience that will benefit them now and in the future. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any concerns about your child’s mental health. Our Enys Centre (health and wellbeing centre) has a thriving programme of visiting and regular professionals that we can signpost children to for a variety of needs.

Students were treated to a night at the theatre on Wednesday evening to watch the Helston Theatre Company's production of 'Cinderella'. For some students this was their first experience of not only watching a pantomime, but also their first ever visit to the theatre. Such a great evening … full of booing and cheering … and a special moment where Mr Brown was singled out by the fabulous Ugly Step Sisters during the performance! Students were then treated to a ‘meet and greet’ with the Ugly Sisters after the performance for photos and questions. What a fabulous night!

HDS student Jack has set himself the amazing challenge of drumming for 12 hours to raise money for two charities that are extremely close to his heart. Jack’s mum was sadly diagnosed with breast cancer last summer and since then life has become more difficult. He is a passionate drummer and musician so has decided to use his talent as a way through this difficult time, while also helping others whose lives have been affected by Cancer. On 12th February he will be drumming from 7am – 7pm! He will be surrounded by friends and the school community as he attempts to raise over £1000 for the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity and the Sunrise Appeal.
We wish Jack the very best of luck with his challenge and are looking forward to supporting him every step of the way. For more details on Jack’s story or to donate please use the links below. Thank you.

Our Year 7 football team competed in the first round of the county cup this week. The weather was certainly challenging but this did not stop our boys, they worked so hard and should be so proud of themselves! Well done to all of the players involved.

On 20th January, our Year 8 girls took part in an indoor cricket tournament. Competing against local schools within Penwith, there were some terrific stand out moments for the girls. Poppy batted superbly well, retiring at 20 runs. Violet lead the way with some outstanding bowling and there were some key pieces of fielding from Ashton. Nala put the opposition under pressure with her quick running between the wickets and Esmae took an amazing catch off the wall. The girls have been regularly attending Cricket club every week and have improved massively, well done!

What a fantastic way to end the week. On Friday, Year 8 students were treated to a performance from touring Czech pop artist THERA.
Incredibly, at just 17, THERA has mustered the courage to let listeners into her personal world, pouring vulnerable and complex emotional details onto each track. As she says, “Expression through music can help a lot of people understand and get through many difficult situations”.
Students heard her performing a beautiful intimate acoustic set and then had the opportunity for a photo and signed flyer. Follow her on @the_thera_

Yesterday saw the beginning of a very exciting music project at HDS. Our very own jazz saxophone expert Pete Truin has begun a saxophone course for some of our Year 7 students.
We are confident that many of these students will feed into our already successful concert and wind bands. With fewer students learning the saxophone in our community we are certain that these sessions will provide a platform to celebrate the instrument and inspire the next generation of players.
We look forward to hearing their progress during our spring term peripatetic concert. They will also get a slot on St Piran's Day and our Summer Concert in Penlee Park. How exciting!

Yesterday, students had the chance to explore their creative side during an inspiring floristry workshop led by the talented team from Duchy College Rosewarne.
The hands-on session introduced students to the art of floral arrangement, teaching them techniques to create stunning bouquets and designs. Under expert guidance, participants worked with a variety of flowers and greenery, learning how to combine colours, textures, and shapes to produce professional-quality pieces.
Students described the workshop as “fun,” “creative,” and “a great way to try something new.” One participant said, “I’ve always loved flowers, but this has given me confidence to think about it as a career.”
A huge thank you to Duchy College for delivering such an engaging and inspiring workshop, and well done to all the students who took part—you’ve truly bloomed!
We look forward to more creative opportunities like this in the future. Thank you for coming!
